Every single time you read something whether it’s a book, social media post, blog article, or an ad, your brain is constantly analysing it, trying to find the fastest way out of there.
This is a big problem for people like us who rely on engaging content to bring money in. That’s why we need to make sure our writing is so gripping there’s no way out.
In the next few minutes I’m going to teach you the secret to make it impossible for your reader to look away.
Let’s do this.
Why Most Writing Sucks
Ever made it to the end of an article and thought “What the heck have I just read?”
Yeah me too.
In fact, I vividly remember my first instance of actually recognizing this.
It was my very first client. He was a landscaper.
Heavily into writing blog articles but unfortunately for him, they were all in vain.
He had a huge blog on his website, there must have been 1000 articles. I looked through a few and the poor dude seemed to be getting worse at writing, not better.
Every single one of his articles glued me to the screen for about five seconds. After that, I couldn’t bring myself to read anymore.
What Happens When Your Writing Is Boring?
When this happens your audience disappears, along with any money they would have spent.
It’s not like the old days where once someone started something they’d finish, even if it was for the sake of it.
Oh no, nowadays if there isn’t a fiery explosion of excitement in the first 2 seconds, they’re gone.
Luckily there’s a few ways to keep even the most impatient of readers around without all the fireworks.
Have Them Begging To Give You Their Money
The best way by far is to make your articles easy to read. They need to flow like a real conversation, a good story. It needs to be smooth as silk.
When have you genuinely been interested in a story told by a 5 year old? Truth be told, never. It doesn't flow, it's more like a recollection of events being read from a book than an actual story.
Easy trick for this, read your sentences out loud. Would you actually say this to someone? Obviously, we’re assuming you’re a decent human being of course.
You also want to make sure you’re descriptive, not like Tolkien writing Lord Of The Rings but also not like your 6 year old niece.
What's more appealing to you?
There was a brown dog standing in the park.
Or
We were walking in the park, it was chilly, leaves everywhere and there was a short fluffy brown dog with a faded red collar standing by a bench.
After reading the second one, you’ll automatically picture it in your head.
This helps a ton when it comes to writing.
Last one I’ll give you for today:
Please, for the love of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, format your content correctly.
No matter how awesome, interesting, or informative your content is, if it looks like a newspaper or the whole Harry Potter book series rolled into one, no one’s gonna read it.
Once they see it, their brain will go into instant meltdown, leak out of their ear, and just like that, they’re gone.
If you choose to follow this advice, I guarantee that you will easily keep your reader’s attention from start to finish. All-in-all resulting in more sales.
