The secret only the top 1% of marketers know

I shared a post a while back about how something that is basic knowledge for you, can be life changing for someone else.
I’ve come across another one of those examples, after talking to a couple of business owners this week who are running 6 figure + companies.
So this isn’t just a mistake made by Jim selling model trains from his shed. It’s made by businesses all the way up to enterprise level.
Let’s get into it.
Are You Overestimating Your Abilities?
I clearly remember the exact moment I learned that I was making this mistake.
We’re going all the way back to the very start of my sales career. I was working for a company that sold running shoes.
I mean, how hard can it be to market shoes, especially ones that looked as cool as these. Apparently, very hard.
I made a couple of different ad campaigns to put up at the same time to get the most coverage.
They all were along the same lines. Showing how they looked, highlighting the features, how comfy they were, etc.
Even The Fat Cats Can Be Wrong
These ads were awesome, or so I though. they even got put up on the wall as “ad of the month.” Now I look back, I can see how even the marketing managers didn’t have a clue about real marketing.
The ads went up, a couple of days went by, a few enquiries came through, and by some miracle, even a few sales.
It didn’t last long though.
The remaining weeks of the campaign were empty, not even a single email. Nothing.
This was around the time I met my mentor Arno.
Because of the trouble I was having I showed him the ads, the guy has always been straight to the point, but this was brutal.
He taught me the most valuable lesson about marketing I've ever learned. And it's made me thousands.
The Lesson You Need To Learn Before It’s Too Late
To be good at marketing, and I mean really good, is actually suuuuuuperrr easy. You don’t need years of experience, or a piece of paper to tell everyone you're “qualified.” All you have to do is sell people what they actually want, not a shoe.
After my chat with Arno I re-jigged my ads, this time with way more success. So much in fact, we were struggling to fill the sheer volume of orders. As far as the company was concerned, I was a marketing superhero.
In this case, people don’t want running shoes. They don’t want comfort, or something that looks cool. What do they want?
Results! That’s what they want.
They want to win more races. They want a new personal best. They want to be the fastest on track.
Do you see my point?
We never sell the product, nobody cares if you’re selling the best shoes in the world. They only care when these shoes can give them exactly what they want.
Don’t worry, it’s not just for shoes. If you can sell it, this will work.
So remember: we never sell a product, we sell a solution.
